Based on Doris Betts’ short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” with libretto and lyrics by Brian Crawley, the 1997 musical depicts a 1964 bus trip through the South by a young white woman with a badly scarred face, on a mission to find healing, and the two soldiers, black and white, she travels with along the way.
